This Comma butterfly was basking in the late autumn sunshine on some blackberries. It is incredibly perfect and I was surprised how orange the wings were.

Butterflies are elusive creatures.
It is not possible to predict whether they will settle for long enough for you to look closely at their colours and markings or whether they will be photographed.
This is the moment where an Asian Swallowtail Papilio Iowi settles on my daughters Howies Tshirt.

British Butterflies 1981 169 Press image please contact me if you are the photographer and I can add a credit
In 1981 I won a prize for a painting of a British Butterfly. Part of the prize was to meet David Bellamy. To create some memorable publicity shots there was a cage of live Lepidoptera. Although the whole promotion was for British Butterflies all the Lepidoptera were large exotic moths
Here is an image of me and David Bellamy with the placid moth obligingly sitting on his nose to promote British Butterflies.
